The historic Mata Fada fishing arena came alive today as the 2026 Argungu International Fishing Festival began. This world-renowned event brought together tourists and culture lovers to witness one of Nigeria’s oldest and most vibrant traditions.
The atmosphere became electric when thousands of fishermen, unable to hide their excitement, surged into the river earlier than planned. It took security officers some time to clear the water for the formal proceedings to start.
While the big catch is the main event, the festival also showcases Northern Nigeria’s rich heritage through traditional wrestling, music, and colorful exhibitions.
The festival originally began nearly a century ago to mark the end of a conflict between the Sokoto Caliphate and the Kebbi Kingdom.
Beyond the fun, the festival turns Argungu into a busy center for trade and tourism, helping local businesses grow while celebrating peace and unity.
