Former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai remains in EFCC custody for a third day after a plan to release him on bail collapsed.
A top government official who was supposed to sign for his release reportedly backed out after receiving threats, leaving the former governor stuck in detention.
The EFCC had agreed to release El-Rufai if a Permanent Secretary and a Director stood as his sureties. However, the process stopped when the Permanent Secretary withdrew, allegedly due to intimidation.
El-Rufai is being questioned over how his administration managed funds between 2015 and 2023.
While the EFCC holds him, the DSS has officially filed three charges in court. They claim El-Rufai admitted on TV to "hacking" or listening to the private phone calls of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
Because he is still locked up, El-Rufai could not attend a separate meeting with the ICPC on Wednesday to discuss a failed rail project.
