Nasir El-Rufai's legal battles took a sharp turn on Wednesday night when he was moved from one security agency to another.
Despite fulfilling his bail conditions at the EFCC, the former governor was immediately re-arrested and taken to the DSS headquarters.
Witness accounts suggest that security operatives laid an ambush for El-Rufai, taking him into custody as soon as he stepped out of the EFCC gates.
The DSS arrest is specifically linked to a three-count charge involving "unlawful interception of communications." Essentially, the government is suing him for allegedly hacking or listening into top-level security phone calls.
Sources within the EFCC confirmed the development, stating, "We released him tonight, but another agency immediately arrested him."
El-Rufai is expected to be arraigned in a Federal High Court soon to face these cybercrime charges, even as the previous corruption investigations into his 8-year tenure continue.
