President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun and named Tunji Disu as the new Acting Inspector-General of Police.
While the Presidency states that Egbetokun resigned for personal family reasons, the move marks a significant shift in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.
Egbetokun handed in his letter on Monday following a meeting at the Presidential Villa. The Presidency thanked him for his decades of service and his role in strengthening internal security.
The new acting boss, Tunji Disu, has over 30 years of experience. He has served as the head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and was most recently in charge of a major criminal investigation department in Lagos.
Because of the way police hierarchy works, about 29 senior officers (DIGs and AIGs) are reportedly set to leave their posts. This is part of a wider effort to reorganize the force's top management.
While Disu has started his duties immediately, the President will soon meet with the Nigeria Police Council to finalize the appointment before sending his name to the Senate for confirmation.
