Following the appointment of IGP Tunji Disu, the former police chief Kayode Egbetokun has been formally honored with a traditional retirement ceremony.
His tenure was defined by a strong stance against crime and a significant update to the Police Act, which changed how long an IGP can serve in Nigeria.
Egbetokun’s stay in office was a hot topic because he reached the usual retirement age of 60 in 2024. However, a new law allowed him to stay to complete the four-year term in his appointment letter.
He is credited with expanding the police's ability to handle complex crimes and improving operational capabilities across the country.
Upon taking office, he famously compared himself to a "Tiger" and a "Lion," ready to protect Nigeria from internal enemies.
The Abuja ceremony was a formal "goodbye," attended by top officers and his family, signaling a smooth transition in the Nigeria Police Force leadership.
