President Bola Tinubu has stepped in to stop a planned "mass firing" of senior police leaders. This comes as the new IGP, Tunji Disu, faces pressure from political heavyweights and internal rivals who are already fighting over who will lead the force in the future.
There is tension at the top of the police hierarchy. Some insiders say the new IGP needs his own hand-picked team, while others say removing the current chiefs would leave him with no experienced management.
A major part of the drama involves DIG Adegoke Fayoade. Powerful political figures are reportedly trying to ensure he stays in a top position so he can be the favorite to become the next IGP.
Usually, when a new IGP is named, his seniors are retired to maintain order. However, the Presidency has halted this tradition for now, stating that the "acting" IGP needs the support of the current senior staff.
With various political groups backing different candidates, the police force is currently in a "wait-and-see" mode as the President decides whether to stick with the old guard or bring in fresh blood.
