Nigeria’s police leadership is facing a total overhaul following news that President Bola Tinubu has asked IGP Kayode Egbetokun to step down.
To allow the new acting IGP, Tunji Disu, to lead effectively, nearly 30 of the most senior DIGs and AIGs are expected to be retired from service.
When a new IGP is appointed, it is common for officers senior to them to be retired. This move aims to "realign" the police hierarchy and bring in fresh energy.
Sources allege that Egbetokun’s time in office was marred by scandals and concerns over his health. Despite support from some high-ranking circles, the President reportedly decided it was time for a change.
There was a lot of public pushback regarding how the Police Act was changed to keep Egbetokun in office longer. Many felt this blocked the career paths of other capable officers.
Once the formal announcement is made, Tunji Disu (who currently leads a top investigation unit in Lagos) is expected to take over, marking a new chapter for the force.
